Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming.net, explains transitioning from turn-based strategy games to F2P MMOGs, creating a global presence, and making trade shows an important part of its marketing strategy.
|

Victor Kislyi |
Q: Ever since you opened in 1998, Wargaming.Net has been known for turn-based strategy games like Massive Assault. But last year – with the release of World of Tanks and World of Warplanes – your strategy has changed to being a developer of MMOGs, especially wargames. In fact, I know you'll be releasing World of Battleships soon. What was your strategy in making this shift?
Victor Kislyi: Since 1998, our company has grown from a developer of single projects to a world-known publisher. We do not regret making the shift from strategy games to MMOGs because many more players can enjoy our products all over the world. As for World of Warplanes and World of Battleships, the games represent the logical continuations of our "World of" trilogy. Th e three projects will have a common economy and will be connected on the global map.

Scott Prather, Senior Director of Business Development at PlayPhone, discusses their new suite of virtual goods management tools, their "2012 $10 Million Social Power-Up" program, and their upcoming Gamasutra webinar.
|

Scott Prather |
Q: Scott, in October you were named senior director of business development. What is your strategy going to be for driving carrier and developer relations?
Scott Prather: The strategy for both is simple -- provide value! Value to a carrier means helping the carrier provide the best experience for their subscribers. This means both surfacing great games and applications, but also doing so in an environment that makes for an easy discovery, socialization, and purchase process. PlayPhone is in a unique position to provide all three through our social gaming network and direct carrier billing connects. No other SGN has this ability!
Meanwhile, value to the developer means providing services such as easy integration and true social connectivity across all of their current and future supported products (iOS, Android, HTML5, Flash, Facebook, and so on), functional discovery and monetization tools, end-to-end effective marketing, and an increased distribution reach. It's a great feeling being able to help a developer from San Francisco or Toronto distribute their game into China, and a Chinese developer distribute their game into the U.S.
