Game Developer Magazine's August Issue Previews GDC Online 2011 |

|

Brandon Sheffield |
As we ramp up to GDC Online, Game Developer magazine will showcase some of the talks from the seminal Austin-based show in a short preview feature. The August issue gets bonus distribution at GDC Europe as well, so we have chosen a British developer, Creative Assembly, to pen our lead postmortem for the month. We've also got a bonus postmortem of Terminator Salvation for arcades, reminding us of the coin-operated days of yore.
This is, of course, on top of our regular stock of columns, with authors from (or recently from) studios like BioWare, EA, Bungie, 343 Industries, and others.
Postmortem: Total War: Shogun 2
For Shogun 2, the Creative Assembly narrowed the game's focus to just one culture, which allowed greater freedom and unification of design. This also allowed the team to create the game they wanted within a very aggressive timeframe.
Feature 1: Perlin Tiling
Perlin noise is used for all sorts of things in game development, especially in the generation of randomized elements. But what if you want a large amount of perlin data to tile together? That's a bit of a pickle! Joshua Tippetts has a new solution, of interest to programmers especially.
Feature 2: GDC Online 2011 Preview
Our guide to GDC Online will preview some of the best talks, summits, and more, for the biggest online developer-focused show in the U.S.
Bonus Postmortem: Terminator Salvation
Play Mechanix and Raw Thrills are some of the few North American studios still making new arcade games. This postmortem reminds us what it takes to make a modern video game for the arcade, from game balancing to physical cabinet and weapon design.
Bonus Distribution: GDC Europe 2011
