Europe has long been both a major consumer and producer of videogames. In addition to housing some of the most successful tool companies and game studios, Europe is also a major innovator and advocate for online games and new and progressive in-game business modules. The Game Developers Conference Europe is the premiere pan-European developer event bringing together developers and business professionals across the continent and worldwide. Held in conjunction with gamescom, Europe's leading game publisher, business meeting, and consumer event, GDC Europe provides the essential forum for learning, networking, business, and inspiration. The event targets exhibitors featuring the latest tools and services within the games industry, business professionals, and developers and students interested in further developing their skills and knowledge within specific game development field.

In 2009, GDC Europe hosted over 1,500 game professionals from over 40 countries, 130 speakers, 40 exhibitors and sponsors, and 250 media and press representatives. The conference held over 80 sessions with tracks on Business and Management, Game Design, Production, Programming, Visual arts as well as topics on Mobile and Serious Games. In 2009, GDC Europe was also the forum for key industry announcements such as the debut of Dust 514, a strategic first-person console MMO that connects in to the existing EVE Online universe. In addition, GDC Europe 2009 also, hosted keynote addresses from Cevat Yerli, CEO of Crytek, Matias Myllyrinne, Managing Director of Finland's Remedy Entertainment, Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of Icelandic game developer CCP, and Klaas Kersting, CEO of Gameforge Productions
